Scott Webb & Merritt
Johnson Victorious at Redondo Beach Triathlon
June 10, 2007 (Redondo Beach, CA) – Merritt Johnson (www.merritr.com), a former collegiate swimmer for Kenyon College and the University of Southern California, joined Scott Webb to win the mixed relay division at the recent Redondo Beach Triathlon. The duo beat the second place mixed team by just over nine minutes, finishing the half-mile swim, six-mile bike and 2-mile run in 46min-38sec. Their finishing time was good enough for seventh overall and third of any relay team, despite the fact that most, if not all other relay teams used three team members.
After a half-mile of battling waves and currents, as well as other competitors, Johnson emerged from the Pacific surf as the fastest female competitor of the entire race, as well as top mixed relay competitor (by well over nine minutes), second of any relay and sixth overall (male or female). All of this in her first triathlon ever! Her exceptional performance put Webb on the two-lap bike course in the mixed relay lead, and Webb’s second place mixed relay bike time (17th overall) and second pace mixed relay run kept the team’s lead at just over nine minutes through to the finish. Final results are available online at http://www.y-events.com/07redontri.htm.
Given the success of their first outing together, Webb and Johnson are making plans to tackle addition triathlon relay events through the summer months. In addition to athletics, Webb and Johnson share a passion for automobiles and auto racing. Johnson, a mechanical engineer for Turbonetics, Inc., has many laps of track driving on her resume, as well as engineering experience in the SCCA World Challenge GT professional racing series.

Scott Webb and Shawn Sampson look to repeat their victory at Buttonwillow Raceway in April. The car has been enhanced with a new array of PIAA Racing lamps (www.PIAA.com), which should provide much better visibility than the team experienced in the rain at Buttonwillow.
